Did anyone GPS the Garrett Murder Site marker to pin down its exact location, in case "something happens"?

Has the developer agreed in writing to save the site? How big a "site" will be preserved? Will a portion of the former San Augustin-to-Las Cuces/Mesilla and Dona Ana Road be preserved at this site, too?

GARRETT SITE
Land title trail

--1-- BLM owned the land. The Garrett historic site was known by them, but their policy is NOT to encumber the land Deed with such ... trivia ... when they transfer title.

--2-- BLM transfer to New Mexico State Land Office (SLO). Senior archaeological staff at the SKO were interested in recording the site. That was in early 2006. Suddenly, staff went silent, no response to us.

--3-- SLO offer the land for development, seek proposed plans, Christmas 2006. Offer closed prematurely.

--4-- Estimated loss to the state school fund, $500,000,000; maybe twice that.

Consolation: Developer sends word he is interested in protecting the Garrett site. As yet, no written plan of what he envisions.

ANNEXATION APPROVED. None of the agencies responsible for protecting this site will lift a finger. However, the developer is aware of the site and has indicated intent to preserve it in some manner. Next week, developer's staff plan to accompany me to the site for inspection, and to hear the history. -- Stay tuned. Cal

An easement for the arroyo bottoms has been awarded to the City of Las Cruces. The site is in an arroyo bottom. Thus enters a new controlling power.

TO: New Mexico Historic Preservation Division (7 officers)

Your priority attention for the protection of this site is requested. It is on New Mexico State land, controlled by the New Mexico State Land Office. That office is in negotiation with developer Phillipou for the development of this land .... Phillipou sends verbally to me an acknowledgment the site will be preserved. He does not state in what form.

To be assured this historic site is preserved, it needs to be placed on a list of protected sites. It has been recommended that fifteen acres be reserved unchanged. That will allow for a visitors over-look area.

Other persons in Santa Fe have been contacted to take action on this matter, but apparently we are so far away they think we are in Mexico. So far, no help.

Your emergency assistance and guidance to us is vital for the preservation of this site. If you know of any other person/s that should be included in this action, please forward this letter

                                                          Cal Traylor

Site is on State land Sect 26, per Dona Ana County Treasurer

NOTE: The above letter sent direct to the Seven by Email today.

YOU ARE INVITED

APRIL 17 – 7:00 PM -- Good Samaritan Village, Las Cruces, NM -- GRIGGS MUSEUM is the subject by speaker Frank Parrish. The museum is now part of La Posta Restaurant. The museum was in the northwest corner of the building, once known as the “Grape Room” for all the plastic grapes hanging from the ceiling. Don’t miss it.
The Griggs museum was a great loss, George Griggs death was a great loss. The Griggs family were pioneers. George had a Ph.D. in geology and wrote on that subject extensively. He also wrote History of the Old West, republished with an extensive foreword by Katie; about $5 on the Internet.
Remember the north door into the Restaurant? It was about half way between the east and west ends of the building. Remember when Katie inside La Post had a lighted neon “COCKTAILS” sign over that door, and when you opened it ... it opened to the street .... and across the street you saw the “JAIL” sign. Always good for a laugh at the expensive the uninformed.
That was the jail that held Billy The Kid during his trial. Apparently he was returned each night to the strong-room in the Amador Hotel which was built of adobe walls four or five feet thick. It was inside the grand hall, at the northwest corner.
SOURCES = Dona Ana County Historical Society Newsletter. I can forward a copy to you; it is in PDF format. === Las Cruces Bulletin, 4 May 2007, p C-10 ==== Cal Traylor

TODAY - I had a phone call from a staff member of the Developer. Staff advised me the Developer does have plans to preserve the site. Staff said the final plan is not made, but they do plan to retain and protect the monument. See photos by David Thomas on this web site. As yet, they have no firm plan as how to proceed, but will include me in the loop as they progress.

I extended an offer to Staff to accompany them to the site and tell them the history of Pat and the shooting that day, and the importance of Pat to New Mexico history.

Additionally TODAY = By chance I was in a waiting room in which one of our councilors was waiting and he sat by me to chat. He complimented me on the Garrett presentation to Council last Monday. He told me he had forwarded my Email to councilors about saving the Garrett site; he forwarded it to Phillipou with a note: "You have just struck gold." Meaning the value in name recognition for his development.

Gotta have hope.

TODAY at the Las Cruces City Council meeting the meeting gathered in-put from citizens. Mainly, there was concern about not enough water for current residents. Las Cruces has for years had water rationing in the summer months. Imagine the water shortage if another 160,000 people were in the one proposed proposed sub division.

So far, can not arouse any sympathy for preserving the Garrett site.

Those photos are really something. We were going to go there, but
thought it was on a road with traffic, not a lot of traffic, but wonder if anybody uses this road? They got powerlines, w would never have found it in a wheelchair must be rough riding.

Still i'm glad I finally got photos! Cher

NEXT MONDAY - April 16 -- 1 PM --LAS CRUCES CITY HALL
The City will hear in-put from citizens about the 6,000 acre development east of town.

That development includes the Pat Garrett site monument we are trying to save. And, visible yet is the old wagon road. The little monument was built by Jarvis Garrett at considerable labor because there was no road at that time.

Join us ... need a large group to impress the Councilors.

TODAY, PAT GARRETT NEWSLETTER, there was mention of the Pat Garrett display in the Police Museum, Dona Ana County Courthouse, SE corner of the building. Nice one room museum which is the north part of a big lobby.

Use the outside door, no entrance from the hall inside the main building..

After the Pat Garrett radio program. two listeners met me in lobby, and we had a nice chat.

The tour went next day to the shooting site. Temperature was not friendly, 40 degrees with a cold wind ... and that condition was unchanged at noon when we finished at the cemetery.

To the Pat Garrett site they went. A cold day, 40 degrees, not warm like the day Pat got-it.

After a good visit, and good stories, the group moved to cemetery #1, then cemetery #2. Pat's body was moved when the Odd Fellow's Cemetery was abandoned.

Home before noon.
